Academic Departments

Chemistry

One of the nation's largest programs, we offer degrees at the bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. levels. Known for excellence in instruction and undergraduate research opportunities, the department provides opportunities for students at all levels to work with faculty in exploring micro-electronics, molecular data storage, nanotechnology, materials science and many other developing technologies.

Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

Our program is one of the few in the nation to organize itself around the amazing interconnected relationships between our planet's various systems and processes. We have a wide variety of degree offerings, allowing students to customize their education and degree. Our meteorology program is one of the best, and the only comprehensive program in the mid-Atlantic. We recently added a Professional Science Master's Degree in Climate Change and Society.

Mathematics

Our long traditions of excellent teaching and a supportive environment for students are paired with cutting-edge research across a broad spectrum of present-day mathematics and its applications. Degrees are offered at the bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. levels. We recently introduced one of the nation's first master's degrees in financial mathematics.

Physics

Physics faculty are award-winning researchers and teachers who guide their students through a broad and rigorous curriculum, and our graduates have been highly successful in both academia and industry. Our research programs cover a diverse spectrum, including astrophysics, general relativity, condensed-matter theory and experiment, computational physics, biophysics, nanoscale science, physics education, experimental nuclear physics, particle and nuclear theory, experimental optics, and atomic and molecular theory. We offer bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees.

Statistics

We are one of the nation's oldest, most prestigious and largest statistics departments. We award degrees at the bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. levels in statistics and are a partner in interdisciplinary graduate programs in bioinformatics, biomathematics, financial mathematics and operations research.
