OUR PURPOSE

The College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at North Carolina State University and its neighboring community have developed a partnership to provide third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders hands-on activities in science and mathematics.  The Summer Program will be based on the College’s Imhotep Academy and will be located at Southeast Raleigh Center for Community Health and Development.

The “Teacher Workday” Program will be structured as the regular Saturday Academy and the contact hours per semester will be the same.  The “Teacher Workday” Program will include students in grades three through eight.

           THE PROGRAM

All of the Kyran Anderson Academy programming is designed to enhance a student’s enthusiasm for science and mathematics.  The program will demonstrate that science and mathematics can be fun and are important to everyday life.  In particular, the program will provide the students with role models in the teachers and teachers’ assistants and in curricular material that features the contributions of scientists and inventors from underrepresented groups.

OBJECTIVES

To encourage students to continue studying science and mathematics.

To encourage students in the early stages of development that science and mathematics can be accessible and fun.

To inform students about contributions of scientists and inventors from groups not currently well represented in science and mathematics.

To build confidence and self esteem.

To teach team building skills.

To enlist parental support and to encourage them to support further the student’s involvement in physical and mathematical sciences.

The program seeks to open opportunities for its students to pursue careers in science and mathematics.

         STRUCTURE OF CLASSES

Summer sessions of Kyran Anderson Academy are held for six consecutive days during the first to second week of June with day #6 reserved for fieldtrips.  Students in grades 3 through 6 are served.  Effective Summer 2003, students in grades 7 and 8 will be eligible to attend summer sessions.  Programming is grade specific led by North Carolina certified teachers and NC State University faculty, staff, and upperclassmen.  Academy students experience hands-on science, mathematics, and health-related coursework.

Teacher Workday Academy sessions are scheduled two to three times during the academic year following the Wake County Public School calendar.  These one-day sessions are held on the campus of NC State University where students have ready-access to science and computer laboratories.
