David Eggleston and Wandra Hill were among the recipients of NC State’s 2009 Outstanding Extension Service Awards. All 21 faculty and professional staff recipients were honored at an awards ceremony on April 20 at the McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education.
David Eggleston is professor of marine, earth and atmospheric sciences and director of NC State’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST). Located in Morehead City on the Bogue Sound, CMAST provides a number of outreach and extension programs to children and adults throughout coastal North Carolina. The Center even hosted the first T1 high-speed Internet service in Carteret County and used it to support teleconference and distance education activities within the county.
Wandra Hill retired last year as PAMS assistant dean of multicultural affairs and student services after 31 years of dedicated service to NC State and its students. Due in large part to Hill’s work, PAMS is consistently ranked among the national leaders in graduating African American students in the physical and mathematical sciences and continues to make strides in recruiting, retaining and graduating other underrepresented minorities.
“Extension and outreach have always been an important part of NC State’s land-grant mission,” said James J. Zuiches, NC State’s vice chancellor for extension and engagement. “Wandra Hill and Dave Eggleston are great examples of how the leadership of these programs truly impacts people across North Carolina and beyond.”
