NC State University Late Schedule Revision Procedures
The University procedures are described below. The text includes the appropriate contacts for the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
NO SCHEDULE MODIFICATION REQUESTS WILL BE ACCEPTED DURING THE LAST 2 WEEKS OF CLASSES NOR DURING FINAL EXAMINATIONS
At North Carolina State University, a deadline is imposed on student schedule modifications at 8 weeks for fall/spring semesters and 2 weeks for summer sessions. After this deadline, schedule modifications, except a change in section, require the approval of the student’s associate/assistant dean (and the associate dean of the Graduate School for graduate students). Note that changes of sections only require the approval of the department offering the course. Requests to drop (or change to credit only or audit) specific courses after this deadline are considered only for unforeseen and unavoidable extenuating personal situations. In general, these unforeseen and unavoidable extenuating personal situations fall into one of three categories: 1. Medical, 2. Psychological, or 3. Dire Personal or Family Hardship. Reasons that are not valid for dropping courses (or changing to credit only or audit) after the deadline include, but are not limited to, the following:
I am doing poorly in the course.
The instructor told me to drop course.
I am working too much.
I do not like the way the course is being taught. I am having a personality conflict with the instructor.
I have discovered the course is not needed for my degree, or for the degree I plan to pursue.
I am transferring to another university.
I want to protect my GPA (for jobs, scholarships, etc.).
Any other reason that is not medical, psychological or dire personal or family hardship. Again, in all three categories the emphasis is on unforeseen and unavoidable extenuating personal situations.
Usually, if your reason is one of the above (or similar), then your request for a schedule modification will not be approved.
I. ADD/DROP/CREDIT ONLY/AUDIT DEADLINE INFORMATION
a. Add Deadline: End of the first two weeks of the fall/spring semester and the third day for summer sessions.
b.
Drop/Credit Only/Audit Deadline: End of the first eight weeks of the fall/spring semester and 2 weeks for summer sessions.
The above deadlines are described generally. Please consult the University Academic Calendar for actual dates within any given semester.
Undergraduate Students: Note however that during weeks 3-8 of the fall/spring semester, undergraduate students who wish to drop below the 12-hour minimum course load must secure approval from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in PAMS. Undergraduate students should be aware that dropping below 12 hours may adversely affect financial aid, eligibility for on-campus housing or satisfactory progress toward completion of your degree (See University Reg 02.05.3).
II. LATE SCHEDULE REVISION PROCEDURES (for Changes after the Deadlines listed in Section I)
Students wishing to drop all of their classes should refer to Section III.
Schedule modifications (course drops, changes to credit only or changes to AU) after the deadline will only be considered for medical, psychological or hardship personal situations. If you believe that you have a valid reason and would like to request a schedule modification, you will need the documentation described below, along with a Schedule Revision Form and a Supplemental Data Form. The Schedule Revision and Supplemental Data forms may be obtained from your department or the PAMS Office of Academic Affairs located in 114 Cox Hall.
a. Medical: obtain appropriate documentation, including items from attending doctors, clinics, hospitals, etc. supporting your request. If your medical information is of a personal or confidential nature you may choose to schedule an appointment with Student Health Services, 1st floor of the Student Health Center.
b. Psychological: you should visit the University Counseling Center, 2nd floor Student Health Center to schedule an appointment for an evaluation of your situation. The counselors will conduct an evaluation and present documentation to you that should be included with documents for review by the Associate Dean.
c. Dire Personal or Family Hardship: attach all appropriate documentation that supports your situation.
Bring your forms and documentation to Ms. Pam Long, Administrative Assistant to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, in Room 114, Cox Hall.
Undergraduate Students: Please note that Section 3 of the Supplemental Data Form allows students to obtain the signature of the Director of Undergraduate Programs or the academic advisor. It is the policy of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences that all requests be signed by the Director of Undergraduate Programs.
Graduate Students: Note that approval of your request must also be obtained from the Graduate School.
