Undergraduate Students

In addition to work opportunities, there are two basic types of financial help available to you as an undergraduate student.

Merit Based

These financial awards recognize and encourage academic ability and leadership. The selection process for these programs focuses on such criteria as academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, past activities in both the school and community setting, ability to express oneself in writing, evidence of personal initiative and motivation, and, in some cases, a personal interview.

All students admitted to the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences by January 15th will be considered for College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Merit Scholarships. No application form is required.

Merit based scholarships are available through many sources such as:

Corporation and business scholarships for the children of employees
Local civic groups and professional organizations
NC State University

NC State Merit based scholarships

University-wide scholarships
You must submit a completed application to the University by November 1st to be eligible

Park scholarships
Caldwell or scholarships
University wide scholarships

The College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences scholarships and scholarships offered by the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Marine, Earth and Atmospheric sciences.

Need Based

studentThese financial awards are made on the basis of your family's ability to meet the cost of attending NC State. Need is determined by the following formula:

Need = Cost of Attendance (COA) - Expected Family Contribution (EFC)

In order to calculate your EFC, you will need to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. These forms will be available in your high school guidance counselor's office right after the first of the year, 2001. You fill it out based on your family's income tax from the previous year, that is 2000.
