Student Information » Undergraduate Programs

Are you curious? Do you like to solve problems? Use your analytical skills and logic to earn a degree in one of the physical and mathematical sciences. Or join many of our current students who have chosen a double major and will hang more than one NC State diploma on the wall. Your faculty advisor will help you put together a program to fit your needs and interests.

Department of Chemistry

Undergraduate chemistry majors at NC State assist in professors' research, work in their own lab programs, learn to work together in teams, and participate in co-ops and internships. Our program consistantly ranks in the top 10 nationally. Many students combine chemistry with another area of interest to graduate with a double major. A few of the most popular are biochemistry, chemical engineering, management, genetics and zoology.

For more information or to transfer into this department from another at NC State, contact the undergraduate coordinator for Chemistry, Dr. Phil Brown.

Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS)

Our interdisciplinary approach combines meteorology, earth science, and oceanography in a single department with Planet Earth as a natural laboratory. Each of these areas is at the forefront of environmental research, creating a dynamic environment for students. Graduates of our program can take on tasks including improving severe storm forecasting, devising plans to minimize coastal erosion, assessing air and water quality, and developing an earth systems science approach to environmental problems.

For more information or to transfer into this department from another at NC State, contact the undergraduate advisor for MEAS, Ms. Maggie Puryear.

Department of Mathematics

For a mathematician, finding answers begins with understanding how things work based on underlying mathematical relationships. Math majors learn to analyze all kinds of problems, gaining a versatility that is valuable in every field, even those not directly related to the physical sciences. Today's math students will build careers as software analysts, systems engineers, actuaries for insurance companies, cryptographers and many more. Math students have a strong track record of becoming full time employees after completing co-ops throughout the Research Triangle area. Many of our students choose the applied program which allows them to combine their math with coursework in computer science, statistics, engineering or other technological areas at NC State.

For more information or to transfer into this department from another at NC State, contact the undergraduate coordinator for Mathematics, Dr. Jeff Scroggs.

Department of Physics

Physics is a discipline for students who want to know why the world is constructed the way it is. At NC State, students learn physics in very small classes from professors with active research careers. One of the reasons our program is among the best undergraduate programs in the country is the extent to which we involve our students in research. Around 90% of our graduating physics majors have worked in laboratories with physicists, either here on campus or at nearby facilities.

For more information or to transfer into this department from another at NC State, contact the undergraduate coordinator for Physics, Dr. John Blondin.

Department of Statistics

Statisticians collect data, and extract and interpret the information it contains. Their skills are needed in medical research, manufacturing, insurance, air traffic and other fields. Because the realm of statistics is so varied, students don't necessarily have to decide their career track until they graduate. And at NC State, they can try out different working environments through co-ops and internships. They can even combine statistics with other interests like politics, the environment or psychology.

For more information or to transfer into this department from another at NC State, contact the undergraduate coordinator for Statistics, Dr. Roger Woodard.
